When my child started looking at colleges, I thought I was prepared. I'd read the articles, bookmarked the websites, and set up a spreadsheet. But within a few days, I realized just how fragmented and overwhelming the process really is.
Every college presents information differently. Tuition numbers don't include the same things. Financial aid letters use different terminology. And there's no single place where you can line everything up and actually compare apples to apples.
So I built my own system. I created spreadsheets to track and compare schools. I put together a timeline so we knew what to do and when. I built a worksheet specifically to decode financial aid packages and see the real bottom-line cost.
It took weeks. And when I shared it with other parents, the response was immediate: "Where was this when we started?"
